The Union of Armenians of Greece expresses its support for the democratically elected authorities of the Republic of Armenia and condemns the activities of groups enjoying the patronage of foreign forces, as well as their plans to carry out an armed coup against the legitimate government.
It is pertinent to recall that the forces planning the coup are the same circles that, in one way or another, are linked to the perpetrators of the terrorist attack in the Armenian National Assembly on October 27, 1999, where eight senior officials, including the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the National Assembly, deputy speakers, ministers, and parliamentarians, were killed. Furthermore, former officials who ordered the shooting of protesters in the streets of Yerevan in 2008, resulting in the deaths of 10 citizens and who remain unpunished, are now, either directly or covertly, preparing to carry out a coup using the same methods.
The Armenian authorities, elected in December 2018 and in the snap elections of June 2021 with over 70% and 50% of the voters’ support respectively, are a democratically elected government. Accordingly, we condemn all illegal actions, as well as the sensationalist disinformation campaigns spread within or outside Armenia, which attempt to portray the arrests and prosecutions of coup-plotting elements as persecution of the political opposition.
All political forces in Armenia have the opportunity to participate in free parliamentary elections in a year’s time, submitting their activities to the judgment of the people.
The Union of Armenians of Greece is convinced that the coup plans against Armenia’s legitimate authorities are encroachments, sponsored by foreign forces, against Armenia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the related disinformation campaigns are nothing but attempts to mislead and distract international public opinion.
